Board Meeting Minutes

Submitted by Jane Holmquist, Secretary

SLA Physics-Astronomy-Mathematics Division Board Meeting , Wednesday, 11 June 1997, 7:30-8:45 a.m. Seattle, WA

Present: Liz Bryson, Brenda Corbin, Karen Croneis, Marlene Cummins, Michael Fosmire, Joanne Goode, Jane Holmquist, Cynthia Holt, Laurel Kristick, Michael Leach, Bert Tepaske-King, Molly White, Pam Yorks.

Liz Bryson, current Chair of the PAM Division, called the meeting to order, and asked each of the board members to briefly state their goals for PAM for the coming year.

Liz's personal goals -- now that she has turned 50 -- are to run the Marathon next year AND keep PAM running! She shared her professional vision for PAM with particular emphasis on exploring new and improved venues of communication within the division. As the "Big Kahuna" she will endeavor to send the membership frequent updates on SLA, the Division, and the plans for the 1998 SLA Indianapolis conference. (Liz gave us all "TEAM INDY" t-shirts to indicate our new status!)

Joanne Goode, as Past Chair, expressed her willingness to continue to participate actively as a consultant and resource for the group for the coming year. Her goal for the PAM Division is that we stay on the leading edge of networking with our Division tools such as PAMnet, the WebPage and the Bulletin Online, and perhaps wander a bit on the fringes by developing some new networking tools.

Brenda Corbin recalled the first time she met PAM division members (at SLA in Kansas City in 1978) and remembered thinking "Wow! What a group! What a division!". As Chair-Elect, Brenda would like to help PAM keep that spirit alive so that future PAM first-timers experience the same reaction.

Pam Yorks' goal, as Treasurer, is to obtain and use SLA-mandated "Quicken" software to keep financial records for the division. She would also like to create (with Liz) a yearly budget for the division, a goal strongly encouraged by SLA headquarters.

Jane Holmquist's goal, as Secretary, is to convey to the membership as accurately and quickly as possible the essence of board meetings and discussions.

Marlene Cummins discussed her goals for maintaining the PAM Division Manual, which is now available to all via the PAM homepage. She encouraged everyone to refer to it for policy and procedures guidelines, and submit any suggestions for future inclusion to her.

Pam Yorks gave a detailed presentation of the past and future PAM budget. Annual financial statements and graphs comparing 1995, 1996 and 1997 income and expenditures were distributed and discussed.

Liz Bryson led a discussion of fundraising and sponsorship issues. It is important that mention of sponsors not be construed as overt advertising. Brenda Corbin will write to vendors to encourage them to sponsor PAM activities. A list of possible options giving the category of sponsorship, fee and benefits was distributed and discussed. Liz also gave us copies of a very colorful brochure that had been prepared by PAM to gratefully acknowledge its 1997 sponsors, and describe the benefits of PAM membership.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:45 a.m.
