SLA Government Relations Resources

Nancy Curtis, Chair, Government Relations

The SLA Government Relations Program aims not only to educate government officials about issues of concern to the special libraries community, but also to inform SLA members of government activities that affect them as special librarians. To this end, SLA provides information to members through several channels.

The most current source of information on SLA government relations activities is the SLA-GR electronic discussion list. Postings to this list include: monthly updates on issues of concern to special librarians, information about pending legislation (primarily from the U.S. and Canada), and the text of testimony presented by SLA and its representatives at legislative hearings. To subscribe to SLA-GR, e-mail the message "subscribe [your name] sla-gr" to listserv@listserv.sla.org. (Leave the subject line blank, and be sure to remove your signature file.)

The monthly update generally appears on SLA-GR several days before it is added to the SLA Government Relations Web page as "What's New in Government Relations." The SLA Web pages also include a collection of "Government Related Links" , which refer primarily to information from and about the U.S. federal government.

The "Government Relations Outlook" feature in Information Outlook tends to duplicate much of the information presented by electronic means. Of course, it is still useful for those PAM members who rely primarily on print communications from SLA.

Finally, the PAM Government Relations Committee--Pat Viele and I will be working to pass relevant information from SLA Headquarters to you, and from the PAM community to SLA. We welcome your comments, questions, feedback, and concerns.
