Order of Operations

When using formulas, functions, or equations Excel operators have an order of precedence. The following is a list from highest to lowest precedence.

Operator Description Example
: (colon) reference operator =SUM(D4:F4)
, (comma) reference operator =SUM(D4,D5, F6)
- negation =A1-A4
% percent 20%
^ exponentiation 5^2
* and / multiplication and division =(A1*A2)/A2
+ and - addition and subtraction =A1+A2-A3
=  < >  <=  >= comparison
(<> means not equal to)
=A5>6
=D5=D7
=A1<=A8
