Y2K: Why The Problem? Early computers were very limited, because they were very expensive. There were incentives to conserve computer resources, which is where the y2k bug can be traced to. In order to conserve these computer resources, two characters were eliminated ("19") out of the year. Programmers thought that this computer system would not last long, so when interface systems were added on, the practice continued. The "19" was also eliminated to reduce key strokes during data entry, thus saving data input time. Why didn't we fix it earlier?
