History of the Internet

The conception and birth of the Internet really began back in the late 1950’s. Branching out of the Department of Defense, the Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA) was founded. The agency was charged with the development of information technologies in order to establish a lead for the United States military in the areas of science and technology.

In 1962, the U.S. Air Force commissioned the RAND Corporation to propose a method which would enable the military to maintain command over missiles and bombers following a nuclear attack. Paul Baran (of RAND Corporation) outlined a method of packet switching which would break data or information down into packets that are labeled with their origin and destination. These packets would then be forwarded from one computer to another computer until the data or information arrives at its final destination computer. This was the conception of computer networks.
