History of the Internet

By 1967, Larry Roberts (from ARPA) began working on the packet switching concept. ARPA’s university and corporate contractors meet to discuss protocols for exchanging messages between computers. The BBN Corporation was awarded the ARPANET contract to build the switch. By 1968, four hosts (UCLA, UCSB, SRI and the University of Utah) were linked together through a packet switch called IMP.

In 1971, protocols for TELNET (Remote Terminal Access) and FTP (File Transfer Protocol) were defined by the Network Working Group. The following year, Ray Tomlinson of the BBN Corporation developed the first electronic mail program. ARPA was renamed DARPA (The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency) and twenty-three hosts were on the network communicating through NCP (Network Control Protocol).
