History of the Internet

The year 1973 brought the development of TCP/IP (Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol) by a group from Stanford University and DARPA. This new protocol permitted diverse computer networks to interconnect and communicate with each other. This year also represented the first time international connections were established between England and Norway.

Jumping to 1983, the University of Wisconsin created DNS (Domain Name System). This permited information packets to be directed to a domain name which was translated into the IP number. Utilizing domain names were a great deal easier than trying to remember IP numbers. By this time, the network consisted of 562 hosts.
