What is the World Wide Web?

The World Wide Web ("WWW", "the Web", or "W3") is what most people think of when they say "Internet." However, the Internet and WWW do not mean the same thing. The Internet refers to the physical side of the global network. It is a giant mass of cables and computers. Check out the topology and history sections for more information on the Internet.

The WWW is basically a way of communicating text, graphics and multimedia over the Internet. In order to retrieve data or information via the Web, you must use software called a browser.
