How was the World Wide Web created?

The WWW began in March 1989, when Tim Berners-Lee of CERN (an institute for particle physics located in Switzerland) proposed the Web to provide a way of exchanging research and ideas effectively throughout the organization. Since CERN members were located in different countries, effective communications was CERN’s goal for many years. The Web provided for such a communications system.
