Writing for the Web: A Primer for Librarians

by Eric H. Schnell

Introduction

The World Wide Web continues to change the manner in which libraries provide services. To attract and keep library patrons in an increasingly networked environment, libraries have been busy developing Web sites and established new Web-based electronic services.

The Web is also playing a growing role in communications, research, and continuing education activities within the library profession. The Web is used for live presentations, to promote local meetings and seminars, and for distance education. It is being used to distribute scholarly publications, manuscripts, and collaborative projects.

In order to actively participate in this exciting new environment, it is essential that librarians understand the general principles of creating and maintaining Web content. This Web document provides an introduction to the basic terminology and concepts associated with creating content for the Web. It discusses new technologies and methods used to create Web resources. It is also interactive and provides the reader with access to associated resources.
