Abstract

Everyday memory tasks are not only performed by heart, but also with external stores like notes or other persons. Despite several studies about this topic, there is no theoretical framework that connects memory and external information storage on one hand and is precisely enough to dedicate empirical hypothesis, on the other.

Following the studies at hand and the concept of metamemory, a model is developed, describing the choice for an information storage for any memory task and any store. A store is chosen by one of three alternative processes, depending on the familiarity of the memory task. A store may be evaluated on the basis of different metamemory parameters. For very familiar tasks, scripts control the choice of a store. Very familiar memory tasks are solved using scripts. For very unfamiliar tasks, a new store may be constructed.

Twelve hypothesis are deducted from the model and tested in four empirical studies. Choosing a store by means of a script is less time consuming than by means of an evaluation. Otherwise, choosing a store by means of an evaluation is less time consuming than by means of a construction. For a group of memory task less different stores are chosen, if the stores are chosen by means of a script than by means of an evaluation or construction. While ratings of the importance of the recall as well as of effort and success of a specific store allow to predict the store to be chosen for the evaluation and construction of a store, this prediction is not possible for the choice of a store by means of a script. Further variables like different surroundings or anxiety as a differential variable allow testing more differentiated processes of choosing a store. The counterplay of external storage and memory is discussed concerning the studies at hand and further studies.
