Abstract

It was discovered that the mixed attach-to route is successful in obtaining higher generation (above 3) dendronized polymers. Consequently, this strategy enables to prepare of higher generation dendronized polymers with high molar mass (above Pn = 400). These polymers have not been accessible by any other methods until now. Novel G1 to G4 dendrons with polarity gradient were prepared. Some of them were converted into the corresponding macromonomers and polymerised to yield new dendronized polymers or polyelectrolytes (after deprotection) G2 and G3 dendronized polymers 23 and 24 with polarity gradient can be prepared by both monomer and attach-to routes. The resulting polymers were used as test polymers for the attachment of dendrons by the attach-to route to further increase the polymer's generation. The periphery of the deprotected dendronized polymers was successfully modified with activated Ester of alkyl chains and some of other compounds, which may result in a variety of new and improved properties. This was an essential prerequisite to decrease the polymers' mobility when adsorbed on HOPG. In co-operation with the group of Prof. Dr. J. P. Rabe (HU), some of dendronized polymers were individualised, visualised and manipulated on HOPG or mica by SFM tip. The protonated dendronized polymers were used to form hybrids with DNA. These investigations should open novel avenues into the nano-science.
