Abstract

Seasonal Variability in Blood Platelet 5-HT2 Receptor Binding in Healthy Male Subjects as Studied by [3H]-Lysergic Acid Diethylamide ([3H]-LSD) In studies on platelet 5-HT2 receptor binding in patients with neuropsychiatric disorders, there has been a marked variability and a considerable overlap of values between patients and controls. In the present study binding of [3H]-LSD to blood platelet membranes was determined twelve times (three times each season) in 32 healthy male volunteers, over the course of 1 year to determine possible seasonal variations. Significant variations in the maximum number of binding sites (Bmax) were found with circannual peak in summer (Bmax 95,71) and a nadir in spring (Bmax 78,36, p <0,0001). The Kd value was significant lower in the summer (0,712) than in the fall (1,195) and winter (1,089, p <0,0001). (Bmax: [fmol/mg protein], Kd: [nM]). This study shows that the seasonal variability of platelet 5-HT2 receptor binding in healthy male subjects should be taken into account in future studies of neuropsychiatric disorders.
