Abstract

Effect of hyperventilation on performance in Wingate anaerobic test It was the purpose of this study to determine the effects of hyperventilation before exercise to performance, recovery blood lactate concentration (blc) and acid-base-balance. Each of 11 healthy men (age 26,3±4,8 years, weight 80,8±6,9 kg, height 183,6±6,1 cm) performed a 15 minute hyperventilation prior to one of two supramaximal 30 s Wingatetests ( Hyperventilationtest (HT) and Control (C)) in a randomised order. This changed normal resting values for pH, pCO2, HCO3- and BE in direction of a respiratory alkalosis (pH 7,60±0,05, pCO2 23,5±3,7mmHg, HCO3-22,9±1,6mmol/l, BE 3,1±1,6mmol/l. Peak Power (PP), Average Power (AP), Minimum Power (MP) and Power Drop (PD) were 12,28±0,99W/kg, 8,53±0,57W/kg, 6,24±0,67W/kg and 16,14±2,91W/s in C. After Hyperventilation AP and MP were significantly increased (8,94±0,77W/kg and 6,53±0,78W/kg). A tendency towards increased PP (12,58±0,92W/kg, p=0,099) was also observed, PD did not change (16,12±2,7W/s). BLC during recovery increased significantly (kap./ven.) in HT (+1mmol/l). On the basis of this measurements a theoretical analysis revealed that the total amount of produced lactate, the timing of maximal BLC and peak BLC was significant higher in HT (16,49±2,19mmol, 6,5±1,1min, 13,8±1,7mmol/l) than in C (15,13±2,0mmol, 5,6±1,6min, 12,9±1,4mmol/l). The alterations of performance and lactate concentration led to changes in acid-base status. It was found significant lower values during recovery for pCO2, HCO3- and BE after HT, but not for pH. These results showed that 15min of hyperventilation can improve supramaximal exercise performance, presumably due to effects of alcalosis on anaerobic lactic energy metabolism.
