We have another special issue to kick of 2015. D-Lib Magazine was first published over twenty years ago and during that period has been consistently dedicated to digital library research, a topic that continues to expand and which now extends to data publishing and all that that entails. The workshop referenced above was held in conjunction with Digital Libraries (DL) 2014 held last September in London. The nine papers comprising the complete full papers session from that workshop constitute the bulk of this issue, followed by one more article that fits in perfectly a history of DataCite.
Our guest editors provide a brief introduction to the issue and summarize the topic well by entitling their introduction Data as 'First Class Citizens'. The topics covered by the articles range from dataset peer review to developing entirely new research infrastructures to manage today's research environment. It is an impressive and thought-provoking range of topics. The world of research does not change at the same speed as the commercial, and especially, consumer worlds change in reaction to digital technologies, but change it does. In January 2011 we published a special issue on access to data, in part guest edited by Jan Brase, and in this issue Jan and colleagues celebrate the 10th anniversary of assigning DOIs to datasets. Last January we published a special issue on the Research Data Alliance, an organization which continues to grow explosively, and we have published numerous other data-centric articles outside of the special issues. And now, in January 2015, we have yet more evidence of the growing importance of data publishing to the digital library world.
