A Survey of Digital Cultural Heritage Initiatives and Their Sustainability Concerns, Pub 11, Council on Library and Information Resources
"In 2002, CLIR commissioned a survey of North American-based digital cultural heritage initiatives (DCHIs). The purpose of the survey was to identify the scope, financing, organizational structure, and sustainability of DCHIs. To gain a funder's perspective on these initiatives, the survey also included a few public and private funding organizations that support projects with a digital cultural heritage component. The survey was a preliminary step in a larger effort aimed at developing recommendations for a coordinated strategy to sustain and strengthen digital cultural heritage initiatives and their by-products...Survey results and recommendations are in this report."

Revolutionizing Science and Engineering Through Cyber-infrastructure, Report of the National Science Foundation Blue-Ribbon Advisory Panel on Cyberinfrastructure

"This is the final report of a Blue Ribbon Advisory Panel on Cyberinfrastructure, a panel of experts formed and charged by the National Science Foundation (NSF) Assistant Director for the Computer and Information Science and Engineering (CISE) Directorate to evaluate current major investments in cyberinfrastructure and its use, to recommend new areas of emphasis relevant to cyberinfrastructure, and to propose an implementation plan for pursuing them. We carried out this charge through individual interactions with researchers, surveys, testimony, review of prior relevant reports, requests for comments, participation in workshops, and extensive deliberation."
"The Panel's overarching finding is that a new age has dawned in scientific and engineering research, pushed by continuing progress in computing, information, and communication technology, and pulled by the expanding complexity, scope, and scale of today's challenges. The capacity of this technology has crossed thresholds that now make possible a comprehensive 'cyberinfrastructure' on which to build new types of scientific and engineering knowledge environments and organizations and to pursue research in new ways and with increased efficacy."
"Such environments and organizations, enabled by cyberinfrastructure, are increasingly required to address national and global priorities, such as understanding global climate change, protecting our natural environment, applying genomics-proteomics to human health, maintaining national security, mastering the world of nanotechnology, and predicting and protecting against natural and human disasters, as well as to address some of our most fundamental intellectual questions such as the formation of the universe and the fundamental character of matter."
"The Panel's overarching recommendation is that the National Science Foundation should establish and lead a large-scale, interagency, and internationally coordinated Advanced Cyberinfrastructure Program (ACP) to create, deploy, and apply cyberinfrastructure in ways that radically empower all scientific and engineering research and allied education. We estimate that sustained new NSF funding of $1 billion per year is needed to achieve critical mass and to leverage the coordinated co-investment from other federal agencies, universities, industry, and international sources necessary to empower a revolution."

Consumer Survey on Electronic Books, Open eBook Forum
"This survey represents an attempt to conduct a broad sweep of determining consumer preferences towards electronic and paper books. Unique to this survey is an attempt to measure attitudes towards eBooks by people who read 'paper' books. A total of 263 surveys were completed by people who attended the New York City is Book Country event in October, 2002. The survey consisted of 35 questions divided into five sections about the participants: 1) their demographic information; 2) their computer usage; 3) their reading and purchasing habits; 4) their knowledge and experience with eBooks; and 5) their acceptance of eBooks."
"Contrary to a commonly held industry belief, results indicate no correlation between computer skills or daily Internet use and downloading an eBook. General readers are as likely to adopt eBook technology as people who have expert computer skills and people who visit the Internet daily...Factors in consumer willingness to read eBooks in the future were also measured...There was a correlation between those that have read an article about eBooks and those that are more likely to buy and read an eBook – indicating that awareness is a key factor in the growth of the eBook business."

This issue of DDQ "starts by suggesting a divide and conquer partitioning of digital preservation challenges that can be addressed almost independently of each other. It also outlines how to resolve published uncertainties [and] how to handle dynamic digital documents, such as those that represent artistic performances and business databases. (The resolution of the confusions is partly based on the observation that dynamic digital information presents no conceptual challenges beyond those inherent in analog recording, which has not been a problem. In fact, digital records are in principle simpler than analog information, because the former are static most of the time!)"
