A Survey of Digital Cultural Heritage Initiatives and Their Sustainability Concerns, Pub 11, Council on Library and Information Resources
"In 2002, CLIR commissioned a survey of North American-based digital cultural heritage initiatives (DCHIs). The purpose of the survey was to identify the scope, financing, organizational structure, and sustainability of DCHIs. To gain a funder's perspective on these initiatives, the survey also included a few public and private funding organizations that support projects with a digital cultural heritage component. The survey was a preliminary step in a larger effort aimed at developing recommendations for a coordinated strategy to sustain and strengthen digital cultural heritage initiatives and their by-products...Survey results and recommendations are in this report."

Revolutionizing Science and Engineering Through Cyber-infrastructure, Report of the National Science Foundation Blue-Ribbon Advisory Panel on Cyberinfrastructure
The following excerpt is from the Executive Summary to the report:
"This is the final report of a Blue Ribbon Advisory Panel on Cyberinfrastructure, a panel of experts formed and charged by the National Science Foundation (NSF) Assistant Director for the Computer and Information Science and Engineering (CISE) Directorate to evaluate current major investments in cyberinfrastructure and its use, to recommend new areas of emphasis relevant to cyberinfrastructure, and to propose an implementation plan for pursuing them. We carried out this charge through individual interactions with researchers, surveys, testimony, review of prior relevant reports, requests for comments, participation in workshops, and extensive deliberation."
"The Panel's overarching finding is that a new age has dawned in scientific and engineering research, pushed by continuing progress in computing, information, and communication technology, and pulled by the expanding complexity, scope, and scale of today's challenges. The capacity of this technology has crossed thresholds that now make possible a comprehensive 'cyberinfrastructure' on which to build new types of scientific and engineering knowledge environments and organizations and to pursue research in new ways and with increased efficacy."
"Such environments and organizations, enabled by cyberinfrastructure, are increasingly required to address national and global priorities, such as understanding global climate change, protecting our natural environment, applying genomics-proteomics to human health, maintaining national security, mastering the world of nanotechnology, and predicting and protecting against natural and human disasters, as well as to address some of our most fundamental intellectual questions such as the formation of the universe and the fundamental character of matter."
"The Panel's overarching recommendation is that the National Science Foundation should establish and lead a large-scale, interagency, and internationally coordinated Advanced Cyberinfrastructure Program (ACP) to create, deploy, and apply cyberinfrastructure in ways that radically empower all scientific and engineering research and allied education. We estimate that sustained new NSF funding of $1 billion per year is needed to achieve critical mass and to leverage the coordinated co-investment from other federal agencies, universities, industry, and international sources necessary to empower a revolution."

Consumer Survey on Electronic Books, Open eBook Forum
"This survey represents an attempt to conduct a broad sweep of determining consumer preferences towards electronic and paper books. Unique to this survey is an attempt to measure attitudes towards eBooks by people who read 'paper' books. A total of 263 surveys were completed by people who attended the New York City is Book Country event in October, 2002. The survey consisted of 35 questions divided into five sections about the participants: 1) their demographic information; 2) their computer usage; 3) their reading and purchasing habits; 4) their knowledge and experience with eBooks; and 5) their acceptance of eBooks."
"Contrary to a commonly held industry belief, results indicate no correlation between computer skills or daily Internet use and downloading an eBook. General readers are as likely to adopt eBook technology as people who have expert computer skills and people who visit the Internet daily...Factors in consumer willingness to read eBooks in the future were also measured...There was a correlation between those that have read an article about eBooks and those that are more likely to buy and read an eBook indicating that awareness is a key factor in the growth of the eBook business."

Digital Document Quarterly, Volume 2, Number 2: Digital Preservation Divide and Conquer, H. M. Gladney, HMG Consulting
This issue of DDQ "starts by suggesting a divide and conquer partitioning of digital preservation challenges that can be addressed almost independently of each other. It also outlines how to resolve published uncertainties [and] how to handle dynamic digital documents, such as those that represent artistic performances and business databases. (The resolution of the confusions is partly based on the observation that dynamic digital information presents no conceptual challenges beyond those inherent in analog recording, which has not been a problem. In fact, digital records are in principle simpler than analog information, because the former are static most of the time!)"

Practical Experiences in Digital Preservation Conference Proceedings, April 2003, National Archives Digital Preservation, ICA Committee on IT, International Council on Archives, Digital Preservation, Public Record Office, The National Archives (United Kingdom)
"Information is increasingly being produced digitally in a wide variety of formats, ranging from email and web pages to digital video and virtual reality models. Cultural heritage organisations must tackle the difficult question of how best to store and preserve these digital materials. When many digital formats have a shelf life of less than a decade, how can we ensure that the information we produce today will be as accessible for future generations as that bequeathed to us by our ancient ancestors?"
"This conference was jointly organised by the National Archives and the International Council on Archives, and was held at the National Archives in Kew on 2 - 4 April, 2003. It demonstrated practical approaches to digital preservation and featured paper and demonstrations by many leading national and international speakers."

LIBER Microfilming and Digitisation for Preservation Workshop Papers and Photos, April 2003, Koninklijke Bibliotheek (the National Library of The Netherlands)
"This workshop aims to clarify the position of microfilming and digitisation by presenting an overview of the possibilities and requirements for combining the two approaches in preservation projects. It will look at the technical and organizational issues involved in developing methods that exploit the strengths of both approaches in an economical manner. Topics like producing microfilm to standards that allow subsequent digitisation and the production of microfilms from digital masters will be discussed."
"Quality control will be a central issue, not only in terms of producing durable masters, but also in terms of use. If users can no longer consult the originals, the surrogates put at their disposal, whether digital or microform, need to meet their requirements in every possible way. In developing workflows and negotiating contracts for outsourcing, criteria for meeting quality standards have to be specified in detail, and extensive cooperation between institutions and vendors is indispensable to achieve the highest possible quality within the available budget and time."

1st International Workshop on Adaptive Multimedia Retrieval, 15 - 18 September 2003, Hamburg, Germany.
"During the last years several approaches have been developed that tackle specific problems of the retrieval process, e.g. feature extraction methods for multimedia data, problem specific similarity measures and interactive user interfaces. These methods enable the design of efficient retrieval tools if the user is able to provide an appropriate query. However, in most cases the user needs several steps in order to find the searched objects...To improve today's retrieval tools and thus the overall satisfaction of a user, it is necessary to develop methods that are able to support the user in the search process, e.g. by providing additional information about the search results as well as the data collection itself and also by adapting the retrieval tool to the user's needs and interests."
"The goals of the workshop are to intensify the exchange of ideas between different research communities to enable the design of improved user adaptive retrieval tools...The workshop focuses especially on researchers that are working on feature extraction techniques for multimedia, computer linguistic approaches, (dynamic) data analysis methods, and visualization methods as well as user interface design."

International Symposium on Information and Communication Technologies, 24 - 26 September 2003, Dublin, Ireland.
"The objective of this workshop is to analyse the strengths and weaknesses of available and foreseeable digital tools as a support for specific types of human interaction. A large number of communication devices have become available for the support of human interaction (from the standard telephone system to the sms service, from email to 3D chat rooms, from Web pages to virtual community platforms, etc.). Many research studies describe these individual systems and how they can effectively support human interaction. Researchers in Computer Mediated Communication, whether computer scientists, linguists, sociologists or philosophers have analysed how certain aspects of human interaction may be supported or changed by the use of some specific tools. We would like to promote a vertical approach analysing how specific interaction types (task oriented, narrative, visual, etc.) may be best supported by individual tools or by certain features of these tools. The new generation of communication tools focuses more and more on communication levels other than the transmission of the message. We are interested in innovative theories and practices centred on methodologies which enable digital tools to support interaction at a semantic and environmental level."
