D-Lib Magazine

This issue marks another transition for D-Lib Magazine. Bill Arms, who was involved from the start of D-Lib and who has since managed much of the editorial work, is ending six years of active involvement, and Peter Hirtle is ending two years as Associate Editor. Along with Bonnie Wilson, the current and continuing Managing Editor, they have helped to create what many, including myself, would argue is the most important source of current information in the digital library arena, as well as a key historical record of that activity. Bill and Peter have done excellent work over the years and I thank them, in my capacity as Chairman of the D-Lib Forum Advisory Board as well as a loyal reader of the magazine, thanks that I am sure is reflected by the community at large. This is not the first such transition, nor is it likely to be the last. Amy Friedlander, who was the first editor and who must be given much of the credit for starting the magazine down a path of high quality, timeliness, and utility, left in 1998. When Bill Arms later left CNRI to take a position at Cornell, the editorial function became a distributed effort. Throughout these personnel changes, the magazine has continued to evolve both in style and in substance. The full run of the magazine, back to July of 1995, is still available and it is interesting to look back on those early issues and see how much has changed. The intellectual content of the articles, however, has remained outstanding. A recent review of web server logs, not of course a precise measure of readership but at least indicative, showed a gratifying constancy in the number of accesses to some of the articles over a course of three or four years, which is to say that significant portions of the D-Lib article archive are still being read at the same rate as when those articles were first published. CNRI, with the help and advice of the D-Lib Forum Advisory Board and the digital library community, including the digital library funding agencies, plans to continue to publish D-Lib Magazine. I would like to thank the community for its ongoing support, for its readership, and for a constant stream of high quality articles. Those of us responsible for the oversight of D-Lib promise to continue working to keep the future of the magazine equal to the high standards of those who have contributed so much to its past.
