What Do You Think?

An opinion piece by Richard K. Johnson, director of SPARC (the Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition), appears in this issue of D-Lib Magazine. In the piece, Johnson argues for the implementation of institutional repositories "to enhance the process of scholarly communication and address the serious economic problems that plague it."

D-Lib articles report on research completed or in progress, while items we categorize as "opinions" have a different purpose, i.e., to introduce thought-provoking topics of relevance to digital libraries and to encourage discussion and debate.

The first opinion piece published in this magazine appeared in April 1999. In the three and a half years since then, D-Lib has published eight more. Each time, I have expected to receive a number of "Letters to the Editor", but only once (in response to Kenneth Frazier's March 2001 opinion piece) have my expectations been realized.

I have heard from authors that following publication in D-Lib, readers contact them directly to provide feedback, support or debate. While we support and encourage this by providing authors' email addresses (unless asked not to do so), the rest of the community of D-Lib readers is left out of that discussion.

The issues raised in Johnson's opinion piece are important and timely. If you would like to weigh in on those issues, or if you want to bring other important digital library related topics to the attention of the D-Lib community, you are welcome to do so, either by contributing an opinion piece for consideration or by sending your response as a Letter to the Editor.
