IWAW is an annual international workshop series that brings together both practitioners and researchers in the domain of Web archiving, Internet and new media preservation. The International Web Archiving Workshop (IWAW) series, organized since 2001, provides a cross domain overview on active research and practice in all domains concerned with the acquisition, maintenance and preservation of digital objects from the Web for long-term access and studies on effective usage of this type of archives. It also provides a forum for interaction among librarians, archivists, academic and industrial researchers interested in establishing effective methods and developing improved solutions for data acquisition, ingest, and accessibility maintenance. Around 40 participants attended IWAW2009, which took place on September 30 and October 1 2009, in conjunction with the Euopean Conference on Digital Libraries (ECDL) in Corfu (Greece). The workshop provided a comprehensive overview on active research and practice on the preservation of the Web. This year's workshop also addressed several new approaches and research (from virtual worlds preservation to temporal dimension of Web Archives) as well as practical issues addressed by Archiving institutions, specifically with respect to managing the storage of large volumes of digital material. In this context, a special Session was devoted to the WARC storage format, which has been accepted as a new ISO standard (ISO 28500:2009), as well as emerging tool support to handle these container objects. In general, scalability issues and managing large-volume crawls were topics of intensive discussions, based on the increasing body of experience now available in numerous institutions, running a series of Web archiving activities in a range of different configurations. All presentations of IWAW 2009 are available on-line at the IWAW homepage <http://www.iwaw.net/>. Copyright © 2009 Andreas Rauber, Julien Masanès, and Marc Spaniol |
