Abstract

In rock and roll music there are numerous quotations, adaptions and arrangements of music by Johann Sebastian Bach, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Modest Mussorgski and numerous other composers. This thesis tries to detect the reasons of this strange kind of rock and roll. Some of the roots of this music lie in the traditional european music, so in some compositions by Claude Debussy, Igor Stravinsky and Paul Hindemith, other in jazz music by Jean Wiéner, Django Reinhardt and Benny Goodman. After World War two it was especially the Modern Jazz Quartet and the french pianist Jacques Loussier (Play Bach), which arranged compositions by Johann Sebastian Bach and transferred it to Jazz - not to the amusement of the critics. This kind of transfer in rock and roll began round the year 1965 in some songs by The Beatles, especially In My Life and Yesterday, of course. Procol Harum, another british band of this time, paraphraded the Aria, part of the ouverture in D by J.S. Bach. Numerous Quotations of compositions by Bach, Peter I. Tchaikovsky, Jean Sibelius and other composers you can find in the work of british group The Nice, but also in the music of Jethro Tull, Fever Tree, Lake, Frumpy, The New York Rock and Roll Ensemble and Emerson, Lake and Palmer. Examples of this music are given in analysis, transcription and audio. On the other hand you will find many different elements of classical musical education like counterpoint, notation or the names, given to bands and songs, too. Some biographies and an extensive discography close the thesis.
