Abstract

Hereditary retinal dystrophies manifest themselves mostly with disturbances of the photoreceptor or the retinal pigment epithelium. It can come to a primary or secondary disturbance of the internal retinal layers. The ON and OFF responses are able to give a predicate about the function of the retinal bipolar cells. This study on 273 patients demonstrates the ability of electrophysiological methods to detect the place of the damage, degeneration or dystrophy by measurements of ON and OFF responses. In approx. 20 % of the cases a disturbance on the bipolar cell level could be proven. Thus it could be shown here at a larger collective that the bipolar cells are applicable possibly also as primary or main damage place with retinal degenerations. The investigation of the ON and OFF responses is a simple, well reproducible method, in order to examine the retina function on the bipolar cell level.
