Third International Conference on Grey Literature

While the title "Perspectives on the Design and Transfer of Scientific and Technical Information" reflects the topics and themes that will be incorporated in the Third International Conference on Grey Literature, so also its logo reflects the development that has taken place in this expanding field of information. At the first conference in this series held in 1993, emphasis was placed on printed GL. The second conference in this series held in 1995, expanded the scope of GL to include electronic publications. And, at this third international conference, which will be held in Luxembourg on 13-14 November 1997, attention will be focused on new uses of grey literature in facilitating the innovation process. A process in which new producers and publishers of GL provide us with new forms and types of GL. Where new methods and mediums of storing and distributing GL create new uses for these resources, and in turn, where new users of these resources demonstrate their further capabilities for scientific and technical gain.

* GL'97 PROGRAM OUTLINE *

  1. GREY LITERATURE FOR TECHNOLOGY TRANSFER AND INNOVATION
The impact and use of GL for scientific and technical purposes.

  2. REDESIGNING AND EVALUATING GREY LITERATURE PRODUCTS AND SERVICES

  3. EDUCATION AND TRAINING IN THE DEPLOYMENT OF GREY LITERATURE
The development of curriculum and instructional programs needed to interpret the knowledge-base in this expanding field of information and to provide direction for further research.

Review of Research Projects : 1992 - 1998

One of GreyNet's primary goals is to construct information resources that can assist students, librarians, publishers, and researchers in their study, use, and production of grey literature. Periodically, research projects are carried out in an effort to evaluate the information products and services rendered by GreyNet. An overview of the procedures, methods, and results of these R&D activities can be found below.

Student Placement 1996-1997 - College of Amsterdam

Jerry Frantzen, a third-year student in the Faculty of Economics and Information at the College of Amsterdam, began his field work placement with GreyNet in September 1996. Jerry has contributed greatly to the development of GreyNet's information products and services. He was actively involved in the preparations for both the grey literature symposium in the Netherlands (NLGL'96) and the grey literature workshop in the United States (GreyWorks'96). He has also been quite instrumental in the design and indexing of the International Guide to Persons and Organisations in GL (2nd ed.) and the Dutch translation of the Notebook on Grey Literature. Both of these publications will appear on or before January 24, 1997.
This date corresponds to the completion of Jerry's field work placement with GreyNet.

The CERIST-Project in Algeria
A Perspective on National Grey Literature

In Algeria, a contrast exists between national and international scientific and technical information (STI). Nationals working in this field are much more attracted to foreign information than their own local and regional STI.

In order to counter this imbalance, a national STI promotion campaign was undertaken. This campaign reflects the direction already undertaken in the PSN Project conducted within the IST Department of CERIST. Consideration has been given to a national editorial system, particularly for GL, as well as, a system for national bibliographic control.

Such considerations would have repercussions on many products such a national publishing standard model and the ASA-database (Algerian Scientific Abstracts), which includes analytical references of periodical papers, theses, and reports published in Algeria.

CERIST is now directing its attention to the application of the SGML standard and the benefits this will have for Algerian Grey Literature in the electronic age.

Visit from Korean Delegation
A Study & Fact Finding Mission

On 9 September 1996, a Korean Delegation from the Korea Research & Development Information Center (KORDIC) and the Korea Institute for Scientific and Technological Information (KIST) visited The Netherlands. KORDIC is a non-profit organisation supported by the Ministry of Science and Technology. Its purpose is to collect, process and disseminate in-depth information in the field of S&T. As a national information center, it has also established a service system providing information in connection with information centers overseas. KORDIC connects the end-users and the suppliers of information through online database services, publications, and consulting services.

In order to facilitate their visit, GreyNet organised a special program in cooperation with SWIDOC, Social Science Information and Documentation Centre and the Bureau Jupiter/EAGLE. Prior to their meeting in Amsterdam, this Delegation visited FIZ Karlsruhe (Germany) and BLDSC (UK) was the final stop on their European study tour.
