Abstract Enantiopure 2-oxo-(N-Cbz-amino)-1-azabicyclo[4.3.0]nonane-9-carboxylic acid (AZABIC) methyl and ethyl esters have been synthesized from readily available (R)- and (S)-pyroglutamic esters. Each of the eight possible stereoisomers of this type have been prepared in gram quantities. Furthermore, enantiopure 1-(tert.-Butoxycarbonyl)-5-allylproline tert.-butyl esters, 1-(tert.-Butoxycarbonyl)-5-vinylproline tert.-butyl esters and 1-(tert.-Butoxycarbonyl)-5-[tert.-butoxycarbonyl)methyl]proline ethyl esters have been synthesized in gram quantities using the same reactant (R)-and (S)- pyroglutamic esters.
