Abstract

During Fascism the Italian state built more than 4.000 holiday homes for children having tuberculosis, used at the same time for having political influence on the young generation. In the thirties about 50 institutions were built and financed by Italian industrial companies. This engagement was not only meant to fulfill their social responsibility, it also mirrored well-understood self-interests. For this study, the holiday homes of four private companies were investigated (Piaggio, Redaelli, Fiat and Montecatini). Especially Piaggio and Redaelli tried to promote their brand in the public with exceptional architectural quality of the buildings. Apart from this, Fiat and Montecatini used the architectural form of their welfare institutions to represent their own power and significance within the Italian industry in those days. The chemical company Montecatini limited itself to a purely symbolic demonstration. Fiat, however, dominating the Italian automobile industrie, succeded in integrating the architecture of their holiday homes in a complex advertising concept. The concept was based on well-known marketing-instruments such as advertisement, posters etc., but included a group of tower- formed Fiat-buildings, connected with each other throughout a spectacular spiralramp-construction. Those buildings recognizable in many dimensions had an extremely positive effect on creating a corporate identity for Fiat and moreover established a successful Fiat automobilebrand. The holiday home belonging to the state-owned company Agip clearly shows that within a state-dominated society political aspects dominated architecture; business orientated functions, however, were clearly subordinated.
