The Heart of Neolithic Orkney World Heritage Site Research Agenda, edited by Jane Downes, Sally M Foster and C R Wickham-Jones, with Jude Callister is the most up-to-date overview of the present state of knowledge of Orcadian archaeology of all periods.
Multi-authored by experts from a range of disciplines, the Research Agenda is a project grant-aided by Historic Scotland, Orkney Islands Council and Orkney Heritage Society, with support from Orkney College UHI.

Part 1 Agenda setting (739kb). Site background, the context and purpose of the Research Agenda, how it has been compiled and the approach taken.

Part 2 Resource assessment (1.36Mb). A period-based assessment describing the history of research in Orkney, followed by a summary account of the current state of knowledge, highlighting gaps in our present understanding.

Part 3 Research themes (630kb). Adopting an approach that cut across period-based boundaries, ideas for future research are discussed under two research strands: artefacts, monuments and cultural identity; and the formation and utilisation of the landscape
|

Part 4 Techniques (550kb). A host of techniques can be used to find out more about the past. Specialists describe what will work best in Orkney and what merits more attention in the future.

Part 5 Research strategy (88kb). Each of the two general research themes is sub-divided into more specific fields. Specific research projects, with an indication of how these might be prioritised, are incorporated into the research strategy.

Part 6 Appendices (86.5kb). A range of supplementary information is listed, including a summary of investigations at the monuments that form the WHS and a table of archaeological fieldwork undertaken in Orkney 1945-2003.

Part 7 Extended bibliography (165kb). Includes details of all references cited in the text as well as key published sources that can provide useful further reading.
